You can use the drive like this with no problems if you're just using it for external storage, but for apps like Time Machine, which makes changes to the EFI partition to make the disk bootable among other things, I'm guessing it doesn't work too well. The "Time Machine" volume would be the only thing visible in Finder (usually) and TM would back up to /dev/disk3s2.īut sometimes when you buy an external drive, it's formatted out of the box with a single filesystem over the whole disk, something like: /dev/disk2 (external, physical):Īnd since it doesn't have a partition table, the partition button is greyed out in disk utility: In the terminal, this might show up like this: /dev/disk3 (external, physical):Ģ: Apple_HFS Time Machine 1000.0 GB disk3s2 Optimally Time Machine would like to see a JHFS+/Mac OS X Journaled volume in a disk with GPT. MacOS is pretty adamant on how some drives should be formatted, and sometimes assumes that they are formatted the way it expects. If it does include results, copy and paste it into the "Additional text" option in the ASC editor, so I can review it for you.
#Wd my passport for mac stuck on preparing backup full#
Ideally you would want this to run for the full length of the TM backup, but if it still hasn't progressed past the "preparing backup" stage, it can be terminated by pressing. Try to let the TM process run for at least 30 mins or so or until you see some of those lines include the word "error" in them. As the TM process proceeds, you should see a number of somewhat cryptic lines appear in the Terminal. Run this command, and then, start a TM backup to this drive. That command is: sudo log stream -predicate 'subsystem=""' -info The only other thing I can think of is to use a command in the Terminal app to see if it uncovers any errors during the backup process that would provide any clues on what is going on.

correct? Regardless, if your Mac can access these thumb drives, then there shouldn't be anything with the Mac's USB ports. correct? I'm also assuming that the USB thumb drives are not formatted as such.

You mentioned in your original post that this issue only seems to occur when you attempt to backup to drives "formatted for TM." I am assuming that you are referring to HFS+.
